UMATIC Video Converted to DVD or Hard Drive

In 1969 Sony developed a video format known as U-Matic which was later introduced to consumers in 1971. This was one of the first videotapes to be incased in a cassette, instead of the open reel-to-reel film strip. Sony, in conjunction with Panasonic and Victor Co. of Japan, along with a small number of other countries, unified the standards and came to an agreement on this U-Matic design.

The tape itself was ¾ inches (or 1.9cm) wide. Similar to the Betamax, the U-Matic design (or low-band) took its name from the path in which the tape worked in opposite directions of each reel and threaded around the helical video head drum. This resembled the shape of the letter U.

The U-Matic S was also developed as a smaller more portable version of its predecessor for use in smaller recorders and made by Sony and Panasonic.

In the 1980s, Sony introduced the BVU, or Broadcast Video U-Matic (high-band) with a greater color recording and lower feedback levels.

In the 1990s, Sony’s Betacam SP replaced most of the earlier designs and the U-Matic fell behind in performance and convenience. While many U-Matic film cassettes remain in households everywhere, not many homes have the availability to enjoy these old movies. If you have some of these old films, bring them to Feldman's Digital Transfer Services. We can convert your family memories to DVD or to a portable hard drive for editing later.

You too can become a movie editor once your film has been digitized onto a portable Hard Drive. You can add titles, delete unwanted footage and add movie-like transitions to your new movie format. Your new movie can then be easily transferred to a DVD and viewed on your personal computer or television.
Check out “How to Digitize Your Old Video Tapes onto Hard Drive.”
